Augrabies Falls The Place of Great Noise

Augrabies Falls The Place of Great Noise

Augrabies Falls The Place of Great Noise – Powerful and dramatic, the Augrabies Falls can be found within the Augrabies Falls National Park, is situated on the Orange River in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Named by the indigenous KhoiKhoi, Augrabies translates to “place of great noise”. With a drop of 56 meters (183 feet) into an 18 km granite gorge, its deafening noise sharply contrasts with the arid and ancient geology that has been shaped over millennia. With water flow of up to 3,991 cubic meters per second, and summer temperatures that reach easily over 40 degrees, it is an area of paradox and untamed beauty. The Augrabies Falls is also home to desert-adapting animals such as Rock Hyraxes, Augrabies Flat Lizards, Cape Clawless Otter, Klipspringers, Verreaux Eagle, Aardvark, Bat-eared Fox, Cape Cobras, Puff Adders and Social
Weaver birds.

Unique to the area, one can also find Moon rock – a unique and massive exfoliation dome as well as the Swart Rante – igneous rock black hills that form a natural border between the harsh environment of the gorge and the more fertile area of the other side.

The stunning viewing decks make it possible to view the falls from exceptional and varying views. Beyond the main falls, the Park also offers several panoramic viewpoints such as Oranjekom Viewpoint, Ararat and Echo Corner. The best time to view the Augrabies Falls is during the cooler dry season, from May to September.

The surrounding area is dotted with wonderful accommodation, and guests are met with the unpretentious warmth of Northern Cape hospitality. Pilots in light aircraft thoroughly enjoy visiting the area due to the private landing strip at Dundi Lodge, less than 5 km from the Falls. It is also only a short, approximately 1-hour flight to the Namibian border, making it a must-see if one is looking for a unique South African site!
